ObJeCtS SUbJeCt tO rUleS FOr FIelD InSpeCtIOn<br />
Same as OBJECTS SUBJECT TO RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND STAMPING, except boilers constructed for a pressure <strong>of</strong> 15 psi<br />
or less having unassisted gravity return, <strong>and</strong> hot-water heating boilers not subject to annual inspection.<br />
InSpeCtIOnS reQUIreD<br />
1. Steel boilers: an annual internal inspection.<br />
2. Cast-iron boilers <strong>and</strong> unfired pressure vessels: an annual external inspection.<br />
3. Portable <strong>and</strong> other unfired pressure vessels: an annual external inspection.<br />
4. Permits required for the installation <strong>of</strong> all boilers <strong>and</strong> unfired pressure vessels. First inspection is made by a department<br />
inspector regardless <strong>of</strong> whether the object is insured.<br />
InSUranCe InSpeCtIOn reQUIrementS<br />
1. Inspections made by inspectors employed by insurance companies <strong>and</strong> commissioned by the department are accepted<br />
in lieu <strong>of</strong> inspections made by a department inspector.<br />
2. Reports <strong>of</strong> inspection must be filed with the department on <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> forms within 30 days.<br />
3. A data report based on an internal inspection shall be submitted by an insurance company when it makes its first inspection<br />
<strong>of</strong> any boiler or unfired pressure vessel.<br />
4. An internal inspection is not required immediately when insurance coverage changes from one insurance company to<br />
another – if a report is submitted by the new carrier on the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> External Inspection Report form within 15<br />
days from the date <strong>of</strong> taking coverage.<br />
5. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> suspension <strong>of</strong> insurance on account <strong>of</strong> dangerous conditions on <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> forms.<br />
6. <strong>The</strong> department must be notified <strong>of</strong> new business <strong>and</strong> discontinuance <strong>of</strong> insurance on <strong>National</strong> <strong>Board</strong> forms.<br />
CertIFICate OF InSpeCtIOn<br />
1. Certificate <strong>of</strong> Inspection, valid for 12 months, is issued by the department upon payment to the District <strong>of</strong> Columbia treasurer<br />
<strong>of</strong> a $25.00 fee by the owner/user, for those objects inspected by insurance companies.<br />
2. An inspection certificate for an insured boiler or unfired pressure vessel becomes invalid when the unit ceases to be<br />
insured by a duly authorized insurance company.<br />

Inspections made on Sundays <strong>and</strong> legal holidays, other than regular working hours, shall be twice the normal fee<br />
