SanitationThe municipality aims to reduce the sanitation backlog which will be 18,332 households by June2013, and will be reduced by 6,831 households thereby improving access to communities withinthe RDP standards ElectricityThe provision of electricity within the district lies with Eskom and the local municipalities, themunicipal plans is to prepare the Electrification Plan which will provide a comprehensiveapproach in providing and managing electricity within the district. Waste DisposalThe municipality in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs are developing tworegional waste sites for waste management to be shared by the four local municipalities. Todate, the implementing agents for both sites have been appointed, prepared business plans andsubmitted them to the Department of Water Affairs for approval, currently awaiting for approval.7.4 Operation and MaintananceIn terms of dealing with the issues regarding operation and maintenance, provision has beenmade through the budget to cater for Operation and Maintenance of water projects andschemes to ensure sustainability of the schemes thereby providing water to the communities fora longer period.7.5 Expanded Public Works ProgrammeUmzinyathi District Municipality is also committed in training and developing communitiesthrough the EPWP programme, thereby promoting economic growth and creating sustainabledevelopment. 25% of the MIG projects to be undertaken by the municipality are EPWPcompliant.Draft 2013/14 IDP Review Page 112Prepared by Umzinyathi District Municipality22 March 2013
