9. MiningThe area around Glencoe and Dundee has a long mining history. Miningwas the reason for the establishment of Dundee in the 19 th century. Miningplayed an important role in the local economy until the mid eighties whenmost of the mines closed. There are currently only one active mine in thearea although mining continues north of UDM in the Dannhauser andNewcastle areas.Map 29: Mining potentialMining is one of the weakest sectors in the local economy but as the mapindicates, there are still substantial reserves of medium mining potentialaround Glencoe and Dundee.
