Management statusSites of Conservation value in Umzinyathi are focused on the Battlefields route, heritage, andcultural tours and to a limited extent on the scenery and biodiversity of the area. There are anumber of tourist facilities in the area. Tourism facilities are largely private sector driven.Historical sites and museums are mostly linked to the so-called battlefield tourism.These areas are managed through a system of protect areas as set out in the NationalEnvironmental Management Act, No. 107 van 1998 and the National EnvironmentalManagement: Protected Areas Act 57of 2003.Management StatusTo address these challenges the district uses the following recommendations for thedevelopment of this sector: Protected Areas Act No. 57 of 2003 Municipal by laws Community Based Educational ProgrammesPressuresImpacts of uncontrolled development on cultural and heritage resources of the districtLack of protection and management of known cultural or heritage sitesProposed Interventions:Undertake a detailed study and assessment of all cultural and heritage resources in thedistrict and the upgrading, restoration and management requirements of these.Evaluate existing municipal by-laws and determine whether provision is made for theprotection of cultural and heritage sites within existing by-laws.
