Zululand(DC26) Uthukela(DC23)DMDMVryheid is of a similar status as Dundee and one shouldconsider the gravitation breakpoint between the two at anequal distance from the two nodes.Ladysmith is of a similar status as Dundee. Vryheid mighthave a slight advantage over Dundee in the sense thatmovement from the northern part of UDM tend to gravitatevia Vryheid to the N3 and linking with the south. Uthungulu DMUlundi do not have any functional linkages with the UDMarea many because of accessibility constraints andUlundi’s relationship with the Empangeni area.Al the elements highlighted in this section was incorporated andconsidered when this SDF was formulated.2. The development alignment at district level2.1 Inter-district alignmentUmzinyathi DM borders on six other DMs in KZN. They are:AmajubaUthukela Ilembe DM UmgungundlovuDMThe Stanger nodal area should not have any direct impacton the southern parts of UDM since natural gravitation israther towards Pietermaritzburg and Durban fromGreytown and Tugela Ferry.Pietermaritzburg is to the south of UDM what Newcastle isto the north. It has the additional advantage that itprovides the link with the Ethekwini area.2.3 Networks (Expressed as “corridors” in the PSDF)The following applies to network links in the DMs affected by UDM’sSDF.
