8.8 Irrigated landThere is limited cultivation under irrigation in the northern parts of UDM.The main irrigation areas are around Muden, south of Seven Oaks andKranskop. Sugar cane is the main crop cultivated under irrigation althoughvegetables are also cultivated in the Muden area. Areas that should havepotential along the Tugela River are not commercially utilsed.Map 28: Grazing capacity (Hectare per animal unit)8.9 Grazing capacityThe grazing capacity of the area is expressed in terms of animal units.One Animal Units (AU) is equivalent to a 450kg cow. The map belowshows the grazing capacity in the municipal area. As one can expect itconfirms the land capability assessment. The general grazing capacity inthe UDM area is very low and it is only in a few areas in the mountainousparts where the grazing capacity is between <strong>14</strong> and 17 AU.
