EXISTING NODES AND CORRIDORS (INCLUDING URBAN EDGES)Umzinyathi District Municipality is affected in the following way by the nodal structure in theProvincial Spatial Development Frasmework and the neighbouring District Municipalities. Amajuba(DC25)DMNewcastle is a secondary node in terms of the PSDF. Dundee as atertiary node is within its sphere of influence and one can accept thefunctional linkages between the two. Zululand(DC26)DMVryheid is of a similar status as Dundee and one should consider thegravitation breakpoint between the two at an equal distance from the twonodes. Uthukela DM(DC23) Uthungulu DM Ilembe DMLadysmith is of a similar status as Dundee. Vryheid might have a slightadvantage over Dundee in the sense that movement from the northernpart of UDM tend to gravitate via Vryheid to the N3 and linking with thesouth.Ulundi do not have any functional linkages with the UDM area manybecause of accessibility constraints and Ulundi’s relationship with theEmpangeni area.The Stanger nodal area should not have any direct impact on thesouthern parts of UDM since natural gravitation is rather towardsPietermaritzburg and Durban from Greytown and Tugela Ferry.Draft 2013/14 IDP Review Page 55Prepared by Umzinyathi District Municipality22 March 2013
