From 2008onwards the sector has declined at an alarming rate of up to 10% per annum. Theaverage annual growth rate for this sector from 1996 to 2009 was -2.3% perannum.Nevertheless, there has been a dramatic turn of events which led to an upwardtrend from first quarter of 2010 to the last quarter. Again the downward spiral wasagain experienced. Undoubtedly the district is not strong in this particular sector. Theneed persist to revisit agro-processing strategies and find solutions that will beimplemented in order to boost the sector and its potential in creating job opportunities.8.4.6 MiningFor the period 1996 to 2007 the mining sector in the district was in decline and this canbe seen in the contribution of the UDM’s share of the total national mining sector.
