SPATIAL ANALYSIS1.1 EndumeniThis municipality is unique, its population is predominantly urbanised or based on commercialfarms and unlike the other local municipalities there is no tribal authority land. The main town isthe Commercial centre which is Dundee, it has most diversified economy, commercial cattlefarming and dairy production and is the centre of the Battlefields tourist region.1.2 NquthuThis municipality is typically rural and largely tribal authority where the population is largelypreviously disadvantaged and relatively dispersed and where services are scarce and often atrudimentary levels. The main town is Nquthu and subsistence agriculture is the main activity inthe area.1.3 MsingaOwing to its rugged terrain Msinga’s population is relatively dispersed and where services existthey are concentrated along road infrastructure and water sources such as the Tugela River.The main towns are Pomorey and Tugela Ferry, it’s the rural region with subsistence farming.1.4 UmvotiThis local municipality comprises of urban areas, commercial agricultural areas and tribalauthority areas all of which exhibit typical characteristics associated with these settlement types.Service levels in urban areas are high except for informal areas, in commercial agriculturalareas they are relatively high as farmers provide their own services and in tribal authority areasthey are low to moderate. The main town is the commercial centre Greytown.There are 19 Traditional Authorities with Umzinyathi District jurisdiction and are located withinNquthu, Msinga and Umvoti.
