From 2008 onwards thesector has declined at an alarming rate of up to 10% per annum. The average annual growthrate for this sector from 1996 to 2009 was -2.3% per annum.Nevertheless, there has been adramatic turn of events which led to an upward trend from first quarter of 2010 to the lastquarter. Again the downward spiral was again experienced. Undoubtedly the district is notstrong in this particular sector. The need persist to revisit agro-processing strategies and findsolutions that will be implemented in order to boost the sector and its potential in creating jobopportunities.4.7.6 MININGFor the period 1996 to 2007 the mining sector in the district was in decline and this can be seenin the contribution of the UDM’s share of the total national mining sector. In more recent yearsthis decline has been replaced by marginal levels of growth which corresponds with theincreased interest in coal mining and the many prospecting applications.The confirmation of the district as the potential mining hub under Special Economic Zoneinitiative will further accelerate growth in this particular sector.
