What should a tax invoice show?<br />

<strong>Sales</strong> <strong>Tax</strong> <strong>Instructions</strong>, 2009<br />

A registered person making a taxable supply shall issue a serially numbered tax invoice at<br />

the time of supply, containing the following particulars,<br />

How do I record my imports?<br />

• name, address & registration number of the supplier;<br />

• name, address & registration number of the buyer;<br />

• date of issue of invoice;<br />

• description / quantity;<br />

• value, exclusive of tax;<br />

• amount of sales tax; and<br />

• amount of further tax if applicable;<br />

• value inclusive of tax.<br />

You must have the Goods Declaration (Bill of Entry) showing the sales tax paid at either<br />

the time you imported the goods, or removed them from the warehouse. You must show<br />

the sales tax paid as a separate total in your summary of purchases.<br />

Records requirement for enrolled persons?<br />

Simplified records has been prescribed. A list of which can be obtained from the local<br />

<strong>Sales</strong> <strong>Tax</strong> Office.<br />

What is the sales tax account?<br />

Although not prescribed but the sales tax account is recommended as a summary of your<br />

output and input tax for each tax period. You should regularly add up the sales tax in your<br />

records. You then put the totals in your sales tax account under the following headings.<br />

<strong>Sales</strong> tax payables - (output tax)<br />

• sales;<br />

• errors in earlier returns;<br />

• benefits provided to friends, employees and relatives;<br />

• goods given away, or taken for your own or your family‘s private<br />

use.<br />

<strong>Sales</strong> tax deductibles - (input tax)<br />

• purchases/expenses;<br />

• imports;<br />

• errors in earlier returns.<br />

At the end of each month, you use the entries from your sales tax account to complete<br />

your <strong>Sales</strong> <strong>Tax</strong> return.<br />
