Sales Tax Instructions, 2009
• Enrolled manufacturers are required to submit a Sales Tax
return once in each quarter. (For example, a return for the period or any
part of the period from the 1 st January to the
31st March shall be furnished
on or before the 15th April, in that year and so on).
• Enrolled retailers are required to submit a monthly Sales
Tax return by the 15th of next month following the tax
period.
What records must I keep?
Persons required to pay turnover tax shall keep the following records:-
• record of purchases, indicating description, quantity & value of
goods purchased, name & address of the seller;
• record of sales, indicating description, quantity & value of goods
purchased, name & address of the buyer;
• record of utility bills, rent, receipts & wages paid receipts;
• quarterly inventory records and in case of retailer a daily record
of aggregate sale.
How do I enroll?
To enroll you must complete the Application for Enrollment, a copy of which is available
from your local Sales Tax office. When your application has been processed, you will be
sent an Enrollment Certificate showing your enrollment number. You should quote this
number on all your returns, and on all correspondence with the Collectorate.
From what date will I be enrolled?
The enrollment will be effective from;
• Date of commencement of a new business;
• Date of the transfer of a going concern;
• Date of receipt of the application, where the application
is made within 30 days of becoming liable.
If the application is made late, the effective date of enrollment will be the day after the
end of the first period in which the taxable turnover exceeds the threshold. This means
you will have to pay turnover tax on the supplies you have made since the sale price of
any supplies is treated as having included sales tax.
