4.274 Sky’s premium movie channels also show a large quantity of films that are of
particularly high quality (at least in terms of box office success). Specifically, Sky has
exclusive rights to show films in the first pay TV window from the six major Hollywood
studios. The term ‘major studio’ is used to refer to the Hollywood studios which are
members of the Motion Picture Association of America. 209 These are 210 :
 Disney.
 Paramount.
 Sony.
 20th Century Fox.
 Universal.
 Warner Bros.
4.275 Screen Digest estimates that the films produced by the six Major Hollywood Studios
typically account for around 35% of films released at UK cinemas but for 80% of UK
209 Some important studios are owned by parent companies of the Hollywood majors. Newline for
example (the producer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) is owned by Time Warner, the ultimate owner
of Warner Brothers. So for completeness we define “Major Film Production Groups” as any of
Universal, Viacom (the ultimate owner of Paramount), 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Sony or Time
Warner (the ultimate owner of Warner Brothers) and their wholly owned or controlled subsidiaries.
