Assessment of the constraint on Sky Sports 1 from other channels<br />

4.119 As we set out in our Second <strong>Pay</strong> <strong>TV</strong> Consultation, the strength of constraint from<br />

other channels will depend on:<br />

� The importance of the content on Sky Sports 1.<br />

� The closeness of the substitutes on other channels.<br />

� The quantity and quality of content on other channels.<br />

4.120 As we set out in our first and second consultations Setanta Sports 1 124 appears to<br />

be the closest substitute for Sky Sports 1.<br />

� It contains a significant amount of the FAPL content which is most valued by<br />

consumers and is unavailable on any other channel.<br />

� It also broadcasts other valuable football such as FA Cup, and England<br />

internationals and Scottish Premier League.<br />

� Additionally, it broadcasts a significant amount of golf which is very important to<br />

around 30% of subscribers.<br />

4.121 Sky Sports 2 also appears to be a close substitute for Sky Sports 1. It broadcasts a<br />

portfolio of important sports that broadly reflect the offering on Sky Sports 1. As<br />

illustrated in Figure 7:<br />

� It shows a significant amount of important football some FAPL games, a<br />

significant amount of UEFA CL, some Carling Cup, England internationals, and<br />

Championship football.<br />

� It shows a significant amount of highly valued cricket and golf.<br />

� It broadcasts more rugby union and tennis than Sky Sports 1.<br />

4.122 Sky Sports 3 contains some of Sky’s less popular cricket 125 , Super League and<br />

tennis. It tends to attract markedly lower audiences than Sky Sports 1 or 2 when<br />

covering these sports. As can be seen from Figure 8 below, average audience on<br />

Sky Sports 3 is considerably lower than Sky Sports 1 and 2.<br />
