relations <strong>in</strong> the context of an ongo<strong>in</strong>g power transition<br />

between these two great powers, the rise of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> its impact, <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s tortuous experience dur<strong>in</strong>g its<br />

transition to modernity, U.S.-<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> conflicts over the<br />

two nations’ core <strong>in</strong>terests, <strong>and</strong> the future of the U.S.-<br />

<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> power transition.<br />

MAIN ARGUMENTS<br />

This analysis holds the follow<strong>in</strong>g propositions.<br />

First, as a result of its genu<strong>in</strong>e development <strong>and</strong> the<br />

impact of its exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence on the <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

system, <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>and</strong> the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> are <strong>in</strong>escapably<br />

engaged <strong>in</strong> a power transition process, which is, on<br />

top of all other issues, about the future of <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

relations.<br />

by the power transition process <strong>and</strong>, if not properly<br />

managed, can force the two to stumble <strong>in</strong>to un<strong>in</strong>tended<br />

war aga<strong>in</strong>st each other, hence repeat<strong>in</strong>g the history<br />

<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s development <strong>and</strong> the evolution of the U.S.-<br />

<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> power transition. Unfortunately, these titanic<br />
