numerous attacks <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>trusions on <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>. <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> was<br />
forced to sign a world record of 745 unequal treaties<br />
with 22 foreign powers 52 <strong>and</strong> lost Hong Kong to the<br />
UK, Macau to Portugal, a large piece of territory <strong>in</strong><br />
northern <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> to Russia (see the shaded circle to <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s<br />
north <strong>in</strong> Figure 4-2), <strong>and</strong> Taiwan to Japan.<br />
<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> has seen changes <strong>in</strong> its territory many times<br />
<strong>in</strong> history. It has been a pattern that follow<strong>in</strong>g each<br />
dynastic fall <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> suffered territorial loss or <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
fragmentation. But this ancient nation has a remarkable<br />
capacity to reta<strong>in</strong> its unity, the persistent quest<br />
of which has resulted <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> the longestsurviv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> most coherent civilization <strong>in</strong> the world<br />
<strong>and</strong> mold<strong>in</strong>g the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese “great unity mentality”<br />
(大一统观念). Indeed, every new ruler of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> takes<br />
the mission of restor<strong>in</strong>g the greatness of the Middle<br />
K<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>and</strong> recover<strong>in</strong>g its “stolen” territories as a<br />
m<strong>and</strong>ate from heaven. It is no exception for the contemporary<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese leaders. <strong>The</strong> CCP has had this mission<br />
<strong>in</strong> its party platform s<strong>in</strong>ce its found<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1921.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce tak<strong>in</strong>g control of ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1949, the<br />
CCP has made the unification of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> one of its three<br />
sacred historical missions (the other two are modernization<br />
of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>and</strong> safeguard<strong>in</strong>g world peace). With<br />
the return of Hong Kong <strong>and</strong> Macau to PRC sovereign<br />
rule <strong>in</strong> 1997 <strong>and</strong> 1999 respectively, the unification of<br />
Taiwan with ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> has become what many<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese call the last chapter of this historical mission,<br />
without which, <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> cannot br<strong>in</strong>g this history to a<br />
graceful close.<br />
But Taiwan is more than a piece of territory <strong>in</strong> history.<br />
In 2001, <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> signed a “Treaty of Good-Neighborl<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
<strong>and</strong> Friendly Cooperation” with Russia.<br />
A key part of the treaty is about settl<strong>in</strong>g the border<br />
disputes between the two nations. <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>and</strong> Russia<br />
