Ch<strong>in</strong>ese analysts also agree with this assessment, 207<br />

although they also underst<strong>and</strong> that the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong><br />

will be able to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to f<strong>in</strong>d fault with <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

use its heavy-h<strong>and</strong>ed approach toward <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>in</strong> the<br />

years to come.<br />

Do’s <strong>and</strong> Don’ts on the Core Interests.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese have no illusions about U.S. stay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

power. <strong>The</strong>y are no strangers to U.S. heavy-h<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

approaches, either. <strong>The</strong>ir most important concern is<br />

that the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> can be unappreciative of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s<br />

core <strong>in</strong>terests, challenge <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> at will, <strong>and</strong> force<br />

<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> off balance from its strategy of at-odds-but-notat-war<br />

from time to time. <strong>The</strong> hot-tempered confrontations<br />

between <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> <strong>and</strong> the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2010<br />

are timely rem<strong>in</strong>ders of this contentious nature of the<br />

two nations’ relations:<br />

• In January 2010, President Obama notified<br />

Congress of his authorization to sell more than<br />

$6 billion worth of weapon systems to Taiwan.<br />

• In February 2010, President Obama met with<br />

the Dalai Lama at the White House.<br />

• <strong>The</strong>se two acts were considered to be the <strong>United</strong><br />

<strong>States</strong> stepp<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s core <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>and</strong><br />

set off a firestorm <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>. <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> subsequently<br />

suspended high-level military <strong>and</strong> security exchanges<br />

with the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong>.<br />

• In March 2010, a South Korean warship was<br />

sunk <strong>in</strong> the disputed waters between the two<br />

Koreas. <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> refused to jo<strong>in</strong> the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> condemn<strong>in</strong>g North Korea. Months later,<br />

<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> also refused to endorse the U.S.-led <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />

results.<br />
