<strong>and</strong> dynastic <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s envoys made stops at<br />
those isl<strong>and</strong>s on their way to <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s vassel<br />
state, the Ryukyu isl<strong>and</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom, until Japan<br />
conquered the latter <strong>in</strong> 1879. <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> claims that<br />
those isl<strong>and</strong>s are “<strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sically <strong>in</strong>tegral <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>separable territories of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce antiquity”<br />
(中国自古以来固有和不可分割的领土) <strong>and</strong><br />
“<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s sovereign ownership of those isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />
[is] <strong>in</strong>disputable” (中国拥有无可争议的主权).<br />
• Japan does not dispute <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s historical<br />
claims, but argues that <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> has never exercised<br />
effective control of those isl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
“physical connection” of those isl<strong>and</strong>s to <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong><br />
is questionable <strong>and</strong> not <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic. Japan, for the<br />
record, took over <strong>and</strong> had official control of<br />
those isl<strong>and</strong>s from 1895 to 1945 <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1972.<br />
• <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> claims that the Diaoyu/Senkaku Isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />
are part of <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>’s extended cont<strong>in</strong>ental<br />
shelf <strong>and</strong> Taiwan’s surround<strong>in</strong>g isl<strong>and</strong>s; Japan<br />
“stole” Taiwan <strong>and</strong> its surround<strong>in</strong>g isl<strong>and</strong>s,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Diaoyu/Senkaku Isl<strong>and</strong>s, from<br />
<strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> through the Treaty of Shimonoseki of<br />
1895 (马关条约); all of those isl<strong>and</strong>s therefore<br />
were covered <strong>in</strong> the Cairo Declaration <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Potsdam Proclamation <strong>and</strong> should be returned<br />
to <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>.<br />
• Japan argues that it acquired the Diaoyu/Senkaku<br />
Isl<strong>and</strong>s through a Cab<strong>in</strong>et Decision prior<br />
to the Treaty of Shimonoseki as a terra nullius,<br />
l<strong>and</strong> that is not claimed by any person or state;<br />
they were not mentioned <strong>in</strong> the Cairo Declaration<br />
<strong>and</strong> Potsdam Proclamation; <strong>and</strong> therefore<br />
are not required to be returned to <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong>.<br />
• <strong>Ch<strong>in</strong>a</strong> condemns the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> for its <strong>in</strong>clusion<br />
of those isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the trusteeship <strong>in</strong> 1951 151<br />
