Notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the provisions of paragraph 5,<br />

on submar<strong>in</strong>e ridges, the outer limit of the cont<strong>in</strong>ental<br />

shelf shall not exceed 350 nautical miles from the<br />

basel<strong>in</strong>es from which the breadth of the territorial sea<br />

is measured. This paragraph does not apply to submar<strong>in</strong>e<br />

elevations that are natural components of the<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ental marg<strong>in</strong>, such as its plateaux, rises, caps,<br />

banks, <strong>and</strong> spurs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> coastal State shall del<strong>in</strong>eate the outer limits of<br />

its cont<strong>in</strong>ental shelf, where that shelf extends beyond<br />

200 nautical miles from the basel<strong>in</strong>es from which the<br />

breadth of the territorial sea is measured, by straight<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es not exceed<strong>in</strong>g 60 nautical miles <strong>in</strong> length, connect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fixed po<strong>in</strong>ts, def<strong>in</strong>ed by coord<strong>in</strong>ates of latitude<br />

<strong>and</strong> longitude.<br />

Information on the limits of the cont<strong>in</strong>ental shelf<br />

beyond 200 nautical miles from the basel<strong>in</strong>es from<br />

which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured<br />

shall be submitted by the coastal State to the Commission<br />

on the Limits of the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Shelf set up<br />

under Annex II on the basis of equitable geographical<br />

representation. <strong>The</strong> Commission shall make recommendations<br />

to coastal <strong>States</strong> on matters related to the<br />

establishment of the outer limits of their cont<strong>in</strong>ental<br />

shelf. <strong>The</strong> limits of the shelf established by a coastal<br />

State on the basis of these recommendations shall be<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>and</strong> b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>The</strong> coastal State shall deposit with the Secretary-<br />

General of the <strong>United</strong> Nations charts <strong>and</strong> relevant<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g geodetic data, permanently<br />

describ<strong>in</strong>g the outer limits of its cont<strong>in</strong>ental shelf. <strong>The</strong><br />

Secretary-General shall give due publicity thereto.<br />

<strong>The</strong> provisions of this article are without prejudice<br />

to the question of delimitation of the cont<strong>in</strong>ental shelf<br />

between <strong>States</strong> with opposite or adjacent coasts.<br />
