lay<strong>in</strong>g of submar<strong>in</strong>e cables <strong>and</strong> pipel<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>and</strong> other<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally lawful uses of the sea related to these<br />

freedoms, such as those associated with the operation<br />

of ships, aircraft <strong>and</strong> submar<strong>in</strong>e cables <strong>and</strong> pipel<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

<strong>and</strong> compatible with the other provisions of this Convention.<br />

Articles 88 to 115 <strong>and</strong> other pert<strong>in</strong>ent rules of <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

law apply to the exclusive economic zone <strong>in</strong><br />

so far as they are not <strong>in</strong>compatible with this Part.<br />

In exercis<strong>in</strong>g their rights <strong>and</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g their duties<br />

under this Convention <strong>in</strong> the exclusive economic<br />

zone, <strong>States</strong> shall have due regard to the rights <strong>and</strong><br />

duties of the coastal State <strong>and</strong> shall comply with the<br />

laws <strong>and</strong> regulations adopted by the coastal State <strong>in</strong><br />

accordance with the provisions of this Convention<br />

<strong>and</strong> other rules of <strong>in</strong>ternational law <strong>in</strong> so far as they<br />

are not <strong>in</strong>compatible with this Part.<br />

PART VI: CONTINENTAL SHELF<br />

Article 76: Def<strong>in</strong>ition of the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Shelf.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ental shelf of a coastal State comprises<br />

the seabed <strong>and</strong> subsoil of the submar<strong>in</strong>e areas that extend<br />

beyond its territorial sea throughout the natural<br />

prolongation of its l<strong>and</strong> territory to the outer edge of<br />

the cont<strong>in</strong>ental marg<strong>in</strong>, or to a distance of 200 nautical<br />

miles from the basel<strong>in</strong>es from which the breadth of<br />

the territorial sea is measured where the outer edge<br />

of the cont<strong>in</strong>ental marg<strong>in</strong> does not extend up to that<br />

distance.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ental shelf of a coastal State shall not extend<br />

beyond the limits provided for <strong>in</strong> paragraphs 4<br />

to 6.<br />
