Abstract
The coastline of Ría de Vigo concentrates a high number of social and economic activities: marine aquaculture, both,
inland and in floating structures (rafts and cages), port and naval activities, shellfisheries, coastal fisheries, tourism, recreational
sports, maritime transport, high density of urban areas located along the coastline, location of treatment plants for
sewage, urban and industrial waste collectors, etc. As a result of this intense overlapping of coastal activities, the management
of the coastal zone is highly complex. The physiography of the coastal zone and the oceanographic conditions of
the Ría have provided very suitable conditions for the installation of floating culture rafts, which are mainly used for semiculture
of mussels (Mytilusgalloprovincialis), and also for the growing of other molluscs such as oysters (Ostreaedulis),
clams (Ruditapesdecussatus), etc. The overlapping of coastal activities may result in a potential risk for aquaculture and
therefore it is important to study the suitability of aquaculture sites. In order to analyze the compatibility of the different
activities, a hierarchical weighted model for suitability analysis was applied giving different weights to the different variables
considered. The model was calculated using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and it considers the distance from the
aquaculture sites to: maritime transport routes, urban areas, port activities, tourism areas (beaches) and waste collectors
(urban and industrial) showing the most suitable areas for predefined cultivation sites in the Ría (the results of the analysis
were applied to the areas where floating farms are currently allowed). Surface currents were also included as a variable
in the model due to its capacity to disperse marine pollutants. The resulting suitability map for aquaculture constitutes an
interactive tool in which coastal managers can assign different weights to the study variables according to their criteria. This
is available at http://ancorim.xeogalicia.net. In addition to the overlapping of usages, the model includes two variables that
refer to the quality of coastal waters: temperature and salinity, which allow for recalculating the model through suitability
map for culture and growth of certain species of interest in the Ria waters.
