Raising awareness of the
advantages of bilingualism
among parents
Very large numbers of people are exposed to
information on the benefits of learning
Welsh and bilingualism through the Twf
marketing material, regular articles and photographs
in the national and local press, discussions
with midwives and health visitors,
presentations to antenatal classes and parent
groups, and a Twf presence at local and
national events.
The Twf project specifically prioritises ‹mixed
language families› where only one parent
speaks Welsh. More recently, the project
has also been trying to support parents who
can speak Welsh but who tend to lack the
confidence to use the language.
Twf delivers its message to parents in many
ways. These typically include:
A booklet on the ‹6 good reasons› for giving
your children the chance to learn
Welsh’ which is included in the Bounty
Pack – a pack of information and marketing
materials which is issued to all pregnant
women and women who have just
given birth in Wales via midwives and
hospital labour wards/midwifery units.
Folder for Pregnancy Records – This
folder is being issued to all pregnant women
to keep the medical records of the
development of their pregnancy and has
the Twf logo and message printed on the
cover.
Scan card – a Twf produced card which
holds the ultrasound photographs taken of
the foetus during routine pre-natal checks.
