scan departments.
Face-to-face advice from Twf project staff
to parents attending antenatal and post-natal
clinics.
Presentations given by Twf project staff
as part of the course of antenatal classes
organised by midwives for the pregnant
women (and their partners) in their care.
Also in post-natal support groups and
parent and toddler groups.
Amser Twf Time – These sessions organised
locally by Twf project staff for the
parents of new babies who can meet with
each other for a cup of tea, sing Welsh
songs and nursery rhymes and have advice
on Welsh resources for babies.
Advice – available by phone from the Twf
office and website.
Newsletter – an annual bilingual newsletter
which features stories of families, including
famous celebrities, who are successfully
bringing up their children to be
bilingual.
Twf Stall in various national eisteddfodau,
agricultural shows and local events offers
a place for parents to feed babies, change
nappies and have a rest. Project staff are
also on hand to share materials and give
advice.
In addition to raising awareness among parents
of the advantages of bilingualism, Twf
has also created language-learning materials
for parents who want to learn Welsh in order
to use the language with their children. The
Taking Welsh to Families course comprises
of a series of six lessons which are aimed at

non-Welsh speaking parents who want to
learn Welsh to communicate and play with
their pre-school children. With its new focus
on young babies, these language classes are
no longer taught by Twf project staff but by
the providers of Welsh for adults courses.
Twf has developed a new series of 4 sessions
called Siarad Baby/ Baby Talk which are run
locally by Twf staff to help parents learn
Welsh nursery rhymes and practice using
Welsh with their young babies.
Twf is also running a new pilot project called
mae dy Gymraeg di’n grêt fiyour Welsh is wickedfl
which aims to bring together parents
who can speak Welsh but choose not to use
the language because they lack the confidence
to do so. Some of these parents haven’t
spoken and used Welsh since they left
school, others find it difficult to use Welsh
when socialising with friends or have learnt
Welsh as an adult and want an opportunity to
practice. All of the parents share a real desire
to use more of the Welsh they have when speaking
to their children, friends and family.
Free childcare is provided while parents
attend the various activities such as mug
painting, card and jewellery making or
having an ‹Indian head massage› which are
organised each week by the Twf project staff.
The purpose of the sessions is to get people
chatting and to realise for themselves that
their Welsh is great and that they have no reason
to be afraid to use it. These sessions are
also used as an opportunity for the Twf staff
to raise parents’ language awareness and discuss
how their use of Welsh can help their
child’s bilingual development and opportunities
for becoming bilingual.
