are never broken by it. Without these, Aleph
does not become manifest. Without Aleph, there
would be nothing at all. Such is the image of the
Aleph. Aleph itself is beyond all consciousness,
human or cosmic. The image of Aleph is only an
image, for Aleph belongs neither to time nor to
space. Aleph is beyond the realm of our thought,
beyond the reach of our mind." [Suraes, 1992,
pp. 65-66.]
He adds: Aleph, no. 1, is the unthinkable
life-death, abstract principle of all that is and all
that is not. [ibid. p.611
IV. The Ain, or Eye of the Void, represents
absolutely No Thing. It is non-manifestation
pure and simple. From it alone can manifestation
proceed. The first formulation of No Thing, its
reflection or reverse image was Some Thing, and
this was represented by the number One, Aleph.
The symbol attached to this number is that of a
calf, the youngling; it was the child of the mother
whom it had cleaved open in breaking from the
womb or opening of the Abyss (Ain). The calf is
thus the symbol of the Calif as the first cleaver or
maker of the cleft. it was the clef or key of the
mysteries of Initiation; the calf or 'child' of all
later mythologies. Aleph, the whirling cross, the
thunderbolt which broke open the firmament is
the glyph of Air or Space. [Grant, 1994, p. 14.1
A Alpha (Gr). "Signifies, like the Hebrew Aleph,
the beginning or a cycle of activity. It was one of
the primary figures of the Gnostic mystery of
Alpha and Omega, and was represented by the
Tetrahedron, which it resembled in its primitive
form." [Bond & Lea, 1977, p. 83.1 see 40, 200,
800, 81 1.
I. The Duad or Dyad.
2 (prime)
11. Names for number 2: see 15,37, 73.
111. The number 2 is the reflection of the number
one. The number 2 is second in a series
beginning with 1. Two represents continuation,
in the sense of carrying onward or extending the
initial impulse symbolized by 1. Therefore 2 is a
symbol of prolongation, or lengthening in time
or space. That is why the point is represented by
the number 1 and the line by two.
14
IV. Key 2 in the Tarot is The High Priestess. a
symbol of the mysterious working power of the
supreme spirit working through tlie
subconsciousness. It is also called Prakriti, tlie
Great Womb or principal thing. It is ferninine in
relation to Kether. Key 2 is attributed to the
Moon, the reflection of the sun, just as 2 is the
reflection of one. Please note that Key 2 is the
path that leads from Kether to Tiphareth.
V. Two is the symbol of duality, the symbol of
the separation of the sexes, of space-time, etc.
Any number that reductes of 2 has a
characteristic of duality. In numerology the 2 is
considered malific, this is based on the quality of
duality associated with the number two. But the
number two also concerns Wisdom, because
duality is necessary for manifestation and
consequently allows for man's evolution. In the
Zohar the number 2 was sleced by God to begin
creation. see 15, 37, 73, 106, 412 well as
numbers which reduce to 2: 29, l I, 38, 47, 56,
65, 74.
VI. "Through me its unfailing Wisdom
[Chokmah] takes form, in thought and word.
[2"* saying of the Pattern on the Trestleboard]
2 Beth. house. Refers to whatever form may be
termed a dwelling-place for Spirit, and the form
particular referred to is human personality. "The
Father who dwells in me, he does the works." As
a preposition Beth means: in, at; among, with, by
means of, through, against. It suggest niovem~:nt
from a point without to a point within. Beth is
the Path of the Transparent Intelligence, linki~ng
Kether and Binah on the Tree of Life.
I. Rabbi Kushner: "Beth is drawn with two IiiSle
points--one pointing above, the other pointl~ng
behind and toward the right. In this way when
someone asks the Beth 'Who made you?,' it
points above, and if they ask, What is his
name?," it points toward the Aleph, as if to say,
'One is his name."' [The Book of Letters]
11. Rabbi Blech: "Why does the Torah begin with
the letter Beth, which corresponds to the number
two? Because our Sages teach that God created
not one world, but two. There is b ? ~ this ,
world, and N2;1 b ? ~ the , world to come. Our
life must always be lived with the awareness that
the grave is not our end, but merely the second
beginning." [The Secrets of the Hebrew Words].
