the 22 letters were engraved upon fifty gates of
the jubilee and were crowned with the seventy-
two letters of the holy name. These opened out
sideways in their turn and were crowned with the
22 crowns of compassion which are contained in
the ancient of days, who bestowed light upon
them, to each according to its place. Fifty
VII. Ruach (Heb.): Spirit. The Egyptian root of
Ruach is Ru, the emanating mouth or womb,
thus showing that the nature of Spirit was
originally conceived of as feminine, and ascribed
to water, or blood. In later times, Ruach was
given a masculine connotation and assigned to
air as the wind or breath of creative spirit, hence
the gust or ghost that became the Holy Ghost
symbolized by the dove, the beast of the air. In
yet later phases of its symbolisms, the Ruach
came to be identified with the Reason. [Grant,
the hermetic art. "I am the sap which maintains
and makes alive everything in nature, and I come
from the above into the below. I am the dew of
heaven and the oiliness of the Earth. I am the
