Westcott says: "Note that ten is used as a sign of
fellowship, love, peace and union, in the
Masonic third token, the union of two five points
of fellowship." Ten is also the number of
complete manifestation, and is an all-embracing
number. Because any number beyond 10 returns
to units through reduction.
' Yod. the hand [of man], creative hand (see
Appendix 14), a tongue of flame. It suggests
that the primary Reality of the universe is
identical with the power expressed by the
handiwork of human beings. Yod is the
foundation of the letters and resembles a tongue
of flame. It is a component part of every Hebrew
(actually ancient Chaldean, the "Flame
Alphabet") letter. It is said that all letters are an
adaptation of the letter Yod. It symbolizes the
flame of spiritual energy which is present in all
forms of the Life-power's self-expression. Yod is
the channel of God's will [Zohar I, page 1 I].
I. The upper point of Yod represents the Primal
Will (Kether), while the rest of the letter
corresponds to Chokmah (Wisdom). This implies
Ill. Rabbi Munk: "The tenth letter of the Alef-
Beit, Yod, is barely larger than a dot and it
cannot be divided into component parts. It
alludes to God, Who is One and Indivisible, for
although his attributes seem to be numerous and
even contradictory, they flow from a unified
purpose and existence. [The Wisdom of the
Hebrew Alphabet]
1V. "This character is the symbol of all
manifested power. It represents the hand of man,
the forefinger. As grammatical sign, it is that of
potential manifestation, intellectual duration,
eternity. This character, remarkable in its vocal
nature, loses the greater part of its fac:ulties in
becoming consonant, where it signifies only a
material duration, a refraction, a sort of link as 5,
or of movement as &'. Plato gave particular
attention to this vowel which he considered as
assigned to the female sex arid designated
consequently all that which is tender and
delicate.
The Hebraist grammarians who rank this
character among the heen~anthes, attribute to it
the virtue of expressing at the beginning of
words, duration and strength; but it is only a
result of its power as sign." [d'olivet, 1976, p.
V. "Yod (lo): Existence which both be.trays and
satisfies life. Continuity in the duration of that
which duration destroys. Yod, projection of
Aleph, confers reality upon all that tends to bury
Aleph (dead or alive). Temporal Yod ( 10) is the
finite which never rejoins the infinite. I'od is the
manifested existence in time of Aleph, 1:he
VI. Yod is the sum total or end of the matter
since it symbolizes the return of Unity (I) to the
original state of non-duality symbolized by the
