Mercurius de Mercurio (Lt). Mercury from<br />

Mercury (Secret Symbols, p. 48). This is one of<br />

many names for the Lapis Philosophorum, and<br />

sperrna masculus mundi (Lt). Masculine seed of<br />

the world. The force of all mighty works of<br />

creation. see 64,97, 55.<br />

7"M air; atmosphere; space, vacuum. Eveer, the<br />

atmospheric air or wind, is the same as the Vayu<br />

of the Hindus. In the yoga classification of the<br />

elements, Vayu means literally "the vibrating."<br />

To it is attributed the property of locomotion, or<br />

movement from place to place, and the subtle<br />

principle manifest in the sense of touch. see 471.<br />

fiery, lustrous. The proper name<br />

equivalent to the Greek Photinos, "lustrous,<br />

bright" derived from phos, light. Uri was the son<br />

of Hur, who was the son of Caleb by Ephrath.<br />

Uri's son was Bezaleel (1 Chronicles 2:20).<br />

Caleb means "dog" and symbolizes the self-<br />

conscious mental activity. Ephrath is a<br />

designation for subconscious activity. Uri is the<br />

Life-breath manifested in Malkuth, where it is<br />

the body-building power following and<br />

executing patterns received from above. see 153,<br />

Title of Beth and the 12'h Path of Wisdom. There<br />

is a basic identity between the 1 lth (Aleph) and<br />

12'~ (Beth)-both originate in Kether. Bawhir is<br />

closely related to Aur (207), Light. Beth is used<br />

in Hebrew like the English "in" and "into." Its<br />

very sound is a concentration of breath and all<br />

the ideas associated with Beth and Key 1 imply<br />

penetration.<br />

distinguishes human beings from all other<br />

;Ma food. The Life-power as light nourishes<br />

;Rt37 Deborah. a bee; Old Testament name. In<br />

Judges 5: 12: "Awake, awake, Deborah: awake,<br />

awake, utter a song, arise Barak [302, lighting,<br />

brilliancy) and lead thy captivity captive, thou<br />

son of Abinoam [PftV'X = 109, father, or<br />

possessor, of grace]." see 206, from the root<br />

I. Deborah, meaning 'a bee' which is the specific<br />

symbol of Sekhet, whose name means a bee. She<br />

is the goddess of intoxication and sexual passion,<br />

hence her connection with honey and with sakh,<br />

or sakti, 'to inflame or inspire' and with<br />

'fermented drink'. The bee, which is the copula<br />

between the male and female elements in<br />

flowers, was a type of the soul which is<br />

represented in Egyptian ideographs as the Ba or<br />

Aba-it, which guides the souls of the dead en<br />

route for the Sekhet-Aahru, the Fields ot<br />

Heavenly Mead or money. Ba, the astral or<br />

double is also a word meaning 'honey' and Shu<br />

and Tefnut are said to dispense honey. The<br />

goddess Sekhet as Sakti is a lunar force, and,<br />

together with her attributes of love and<br />

sweetness, a fit symbol of the honeymoon, which<br />

indicates the sexual nature of the force in<br />

11. Sekhet: The fierce lioness-headed goddess of<br />

the South. Her ferocious qualities typifL sexual<br />

heat and the fire of fermented drink. Her<br />

counterpart in the North is the gentle Bast, or<br />

Pasht, the lunar cat-headed deity of the cool of<br />

night, as Sekhet is solar and of the furnace-heat<br />

of day. From the name Sekhet was derived the<br />

Indian word shakti, meaning power, with special<br />

reference to the magical power of creation as<br />

typified by the Fire Snake. [ibid., pp. 277-2781<br />
