1U Shin. tooth, fang. Refers of cosmic fire
(prana). One of the three "Mother Letters"
attributed to the Element Fire. The sound of the
letter, "sh!" is an admonition to silence and the
41h occult maxium "Be Silent." see 360, 8 14, 24.
I. The character of Shin is composed of three
tounges of flame (Yod) rising from a firery base
(Vav). Thus the secret value of Shin is 36 [3
Yods (30) and Vav (6)]. Thirty-six is the
extension of 8, and 8 is Cheth (n, see Book of
Tokens meditation on Cheth. Key 20 depicts the
liberation described). The Egyptian hieroglyph
for the sound 'sh" is an undulation garden.
Compared with the symbolism of Key 20 & Key
8.
11. The power of liberation is compared with a
venomous serpent, because the tooth (Shin)
breaks down forms to begin the process of
assimilation. The old must die before the new
man may be born. Thirty-six is also 6 x 6 or the
magic square (see Appendix 6) of Tiphareth.
What is born anew is the Son (Sun) in Tiphareth.
111. "The form of the letter Shin reminds one of a
mouth full of teeth. Unlike the letter Peh which
is turned to eat whatever it finds on its level, the
Shin is turned upwards to receive nourishment
from on high. It is thus the higher octave if what
is represented by Peh. [The Idiot Speaks, Caleb
Folis]
IV. "HE caused the letter Shin to reign in fire."
[Sephir Yetzirah 3:5]
V. Rabbi Glazerson: "According to the Zohar,
the letter Shin is called "the letter of truth." The
three branches represent the three aspects of the
truth about man: (I) he possesses a spiritual soul
(Neshamah), (2) a spirit (Rauch), and (3) bodily
soul (Nefesh)." [Letters of Fire].
VI. "This character as consonant belongs to the
sibilant sound, and depicts in an onomatopoetic
manner, light movements, sounds durable and
334
soft. As symbolic image it represents the part of
the bow from which the arrow is shot. In
Hebrew, it is the sign of relative duration and of
the movement attached thereunto. It is derived
from the vocal sound ', become consonant by
joining to its expression the respective
significations of the consonants 1 and 0. As
prepositive relation, it constitutes a sort of
pronominal article and is placed at the head of
nouns and verbs, to communicate to them the
double power that it possesses of movement and
of conjunction." [d'olivet, 1976, pp. 455-456.1
VII. "Sheen (300): Prodigious cosmic motion.
Movement of everything that exists. All
organisms live through Sheen (300), either
through or against its action, because Sheen is
similar to a powerful breath which vivifies and
carries away. Only the most extreme weakness
can elude or oppose it." [Suraes, 1992, p. 66.1
PT~N Ml Ruach Elohim. the Life-Breath of
the Gods (Creative powers). The breath on the
Mighty Ones, the Spirit of God, Holy Spirit.
Maybe understood as the Life-breath has seven
aspects, its motion (in and out = 2) is 2x7 or 14.
see 360, 86 and Genesis 1.3.
