temple to the spiritual man. Unfortunately both the<br />

one and the other are destined to an occupancy and<br />

enjoyment all too brief in view <strong>of</strong> the vast labor bestowed<br />

upon them. Besides these buildings are the<br />

Hall <strong>of</strong> Seventies, in which is a library, the Masonic<br />

Hall, and Concert Hall; also there a university and<br />

other institutions are established, though having as<br />

yet no separate edifices.<br />

The president <strong>of</strong> the university and pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

mathematics and English literature is James Kelly,<br />

a graduate <strong>of</strong> Trinity College, Dublin, and a ripe<br />

scholar; Orson Pratt, a man <strong>of</strong> pure mind and high order<br />

<strong>of</strong> ability, who without early education and amidst<br />

great difficulties had to achieve learning as best he<br />

could, and in truth has achieved it; pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> languages,<br />

Orson Spencer, graduate <strong>of</strong> Union College<br />

and the Baptist Theological Seminary, New York;<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> church history, Sidney Rigdon, versed<br />

in history, belles-lettres, and oratory. In the board<br />

<strong>of</strong> regents we find the leading men <strong>of</strong> the church; 8<br />

connected with the university were four commonschool<br />

wards, with three wardens to each.<br />

In 1840 all the male members <strong>of</strong> the church between<br />

the ages <strong>of</strong> sixteen and fifty were enrolled in<br />

a military organization known as the Nauvoo Legion,<br />

which eventually numbered some four thousand men,<br />

and constituted part <strong>of</strong> the state militia. It was divided<br />

into two cohorts, and then into regiments, battalions,<br />

and companies, Lieutenant-general Joseph<br />

Smith being commander-in-chief. 7 The organization<br />
