scape. The fields were billowing with grain, the<br />

cattle sleek and thriving, the barns well filled, the windmills<br />

buzzing merrily. Nevertheless, among these<br />

smiling settlements a painful deficiency might be<br />

noticed. Everything that industry and thrift could<br />

accomplish had been done for the farm, but nothing<br />

for the home. Between the houses <strong>of</strong> the poor and<br />

the rich there was little difference, except that one<br />

was <strong>of</strong> logs and the other <strong>of</strong> boards. Both seemed<br />

like mere enclosures in which to eat and sleep, and<br />

Salt Lake City in 1860.<br />

around neither was there any sign that the inmates<br />

took a pride in their home. One might pass three<br />

dwellings enclosed by a common fence, and belonging<br />

to one master, but nowhere could be seen any <strong>of</strong> those<br />

simple embellishments that cost so little and mean so<br />

much—the cultivated garden plat, the row <strong>of</strong> shade<br />

trees, the rose-bush at the doorway, or the trellised<br />

creeper at the porch.<br />

The city itself wore a different aspect. The streets,
