book <strong>of</strong> Mormon and other works were translated into Italian in 1852. The<br />

Voice <strong>of</strong> Joseph: A Brief Account <strong>of</strong> the Rise, Progress, and Persecutions <strong>of</strong><br />

the Church <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ <strong>of</strong> Latter-day Saints; with their present position and<br />

prospects in <strong>Utah</strong> Territory, together with American Exiles' Memorial to Congress,<br />

by Lorenzo Snow, one <strong>of</strong> the Twelve Apostles, Liverpool and London,<br />

1852, abbreviated from the Italian edition, was published for general circulation<br />

in various languages, and is a well-written historical sketch, admirably<br />

adapted to the purpose. Besides the expulsion from Missouri and Illinois, a<br />

general view <strong>of</strong> their 'location, settlements, and government in Upper California'<br />

is well presented. There is also an account <strong>of</strong> the missionary labors <strong>of</strong> the<br />

elders in the United States, Canada, England, Wales, Scotland, and elsewhere.<br />

35 Branches <strong>of</strong> the church were established in Switzerland, under the direction<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lorenzo Snow, about the year 1S50. <strong>Utah</strong> Pioneers, 33d Ann., 28. Soon<br />

afterward Elder T. B. H. Stenhouse published at Geneva a volume, entitled<br />

Le Refecteur, and organized a branch <strong>of</strong> the church in the French quarter <strong>of</strong><br />

Smith published two volumes <strong>of</strong> a monthly periodical styled Der Darsteller<br />

der heiligen der letzen tage. Other books and pamphlets innumerable were<br />

Switzerland 17 branches, 31 elders, and 494 members <strong>of</strong> the church, 127 baptisms<br />

3a A letter from Elder I). W. Jones, dated Concepcion, Chihuahua, Mex.<br />

Apr. 21, 1876, states that he and his fellow-missionaries were hard at work.<br />

About this time Jones preached at the theatre in the city <strong>of</strong> Chihuahua, but<br />

was ill received. Millennial Star, xxxviii. 3S1, 509. Portions <strong>of</strong> the book <strong>of</strong><br />

Mormon were translated into Spanish for the use <strong>of</strong> Mexicans, and entitled<br />

Trozos Selectos del Libro de Mormon (S. L. City, 1875).<br />

on the island <strong>of</strong> Tooboui, Society group, where he had organized a<br />

church with about a dozen members. At the same time, Noah Rogers and<br />

Benj. F. Grouard were stationed at Tahiti, but met with little success. In<br />
