This amount does not <strong>of</strong> course include the income<br />

from tithes, which in 1880 was estimated at $458,-<br />

000, 43 a sum not larger in proportion to population<br />

than is expended for religious and charitable purposes<br />

in other states and territories <strong>of</strong> the union.<br />

The receipts <strong>of</strong> the United States internal revenue<br />

from <strong>Utah</strong> were for 1883 about $48,000, and for the<br />

twenty preceding years averaged about $40,000.<br />

Neither tobacco nor spirituous liquors were manufactured<br />

in the country, though 230,000 cigars and<br />

some 18,000 barrels <strong>of</strong> malt liquors made during the<br />

fiscal year ending June 30, 1883, yielded revenue to<br />

the amount <strong>of</strong> $18,097. Apart from these items, most<br />

<strong>of</strong> the internal revenue receipts were derived from<br />

license taxes. 44<br />

The United States land-<strong>of</strong>fice at Salt Lake City was<br />

opened in the year 1869. Up to the 31st <strong>of</strong> ^ March,<br />

1884, the total payments made through this <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

were $831,209.08, this amount representing almost<br />

the entire sum paid for lands disposed <strong>of</strong> by government.<br />

During this period 6,388 homestead entries<br />

were made, covering an area <strong>of</strong> 844,159 acres, and<br />

2,773 final pro<strong>of</strong>s. The number <strong>of</strong> mineral-land en-<br />

tries was 1,023, and their area 8,656 acres; <strong>of</strong> coalland<br />

entries 72, with an area <strong>of</strong> 10,423 acres. 45<br />
