In British India, 25 Ceylon, British Guiana, at the<br />

cape <strong>of</strong> Good Hope, in the West Indies, 26 in Australia,<br />

Tasmania, New Zealand, 27 Malta, and Gibraltar, there<br />

were also branches <strong>of</strong> the church, though in none <strong>of</strong><br />

the British colonies were the missionaries received so<br />

cordially as in the mother country.<br />

21 On July 27, 1840, Apostle John Taylor, Elder McGaffe, and Priest Black<br />

sailed from Liverpool for Ireland, staying about a week at Newry and Lisburn.<br />

They were followed in Sept. by Elder Theodore Curtis. <strong>Utah</strong> Pioneers,<br />

33d Ann., 26. On May 29, 1843, Elder Jas Sloan was appointed to Ireland.<br />

Times and Seasons, iv. 232. Mackay, The Mormons, 24Ti, says that Mormonism<br />

was not preached in Dublin till 1850, but this statemeut is doubtful. In<br />

Sept. 1S40 Taylor visited the Isle <strong>of</strong> Man, accompanied by Hiram Clark and<br />

one or two brethren from Liverpool. <strong>Utah</strong> Pioneers, 33d Ann., 26. Taylor remained<br />

but a short time, being replaced by J. Blakeslee in Nov. A church<br />

was organized at Douglas. Clark returned to Liverpool on Jan. 8, 1S41, and<br />

Blakeslee on Feb. 16th, leaving a membership <strong>of</strong> 70. Times and Seasons, ii.<br />

rj Win Donaldson sailed from England for Calcutta early in August 1840.<br />

Times and Seaso?is, ii. 229. Win Willes landed in Calcutta Dec. 25, 1851,<br />

and during his sojourn baptized some 300 natives and established a church<br />

<strong>of</strong> about 40 Europeans. <strong>Utah</strong> Pioneers, 33d Ann. 26. Jos. Richards was also<br />

in Calcutta in 1851. Id., 28. Elders Nathaniel V. Jones, Robert Skelton,<br />

Samuel A. Woolley, Wm Fotheringham, Richard Ballantyne, Truman Leonard,<br />

Amos Milton Musser, Robert Owen, and W Tm F. Carter arrived in Calcutta<br />

and held a conference in April 1S53. Smith's Rise, Progress, and Travels,<br />

20 Elders Aaron F. Farr, Darwin Richardson, Jesse Turpin, and A. B.<br />

Lambson landed at Jamaica Jan. 10, 1853. They called on the American<br />

consul, who told them that the law extended toleration to all religious sects,<br />

and soon afterward held a meeting; but a mob gathered round the hall where<br />

service was being held and threatened to tear it down, as they had heard<br />

that the elders were polygamists. Two <strong>of</strong> the missionaries were shot at while<br />

making their escape from the island. Smith's Pise, Progress, and Travels, 36.<br />

27 Wm Barrett was sent to Australia from Burslem, England, by Geo. A.<br />

Smith in July 1840. Smith's Pise, Progress, and Travels, 34. In 1S45 Andrew<br />

Anderson had organized a church <strong>of</strong> 9 members at Montipeer township.<br />

Times and Seasons, vi. 9S9. In March 1852 Jno. Murdoch and Chas W.<br />

Wandell had organized a church with a membership <strong>of</strong> 36 at Sydney. Early<br />

in 1853 Augustus Farnham, Wm Hyde, Burr Frost, Josiah W. Fleming, and<br />

others landed at Sydney, and afterward extended their labors to Van Dieman's<br />

Land and New Zealand. <strong>Utah</strong> Pioneers, 33d Ann., 26. Smith's Pise,<br />

Progress, and Travels, 34. In August <strong>of</strong> this year Farnham published the<br />

first number <strong>of</strong> Zion's Watchman at Sydney. It was continued until Apr.<br />

and Travels, 34-6. In 1S52 the Australian missions were prosperous. Des-<br />

• ret X< ws, May 28, 1853. In later years they were less successful. On the<br />

6th <strong>of</strong> April, 1876, Elder Croxall writes from Sidney that the brethren are<br />

working faithfully in Australia, but meet with little encouragement. Millennial<br />

Star, xxxviii. 381. In this year there were four Mormon missionaries at<br />

Christ Church, and one at Wellington, N. Z. There were also two or more<br />

at llobart Town, Tasmania. Id., 379, 509.
