diately beyond the northern limit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Utah</strong>," <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

to furnish conveyance for all who wished to form a<br />

settlement at that point. More than two hundred<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Morrisites availed themselves <strong>of</strong> this <strong>of</strong>fer,<br />

removing with their effects under the escort <strong>of</strong> a<br />

company <strong>of</strong> volunteers.<br />

This feud between the saints and the federal <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />

was brought to an end in June 1863, Harding being<br />

superseded as governor" by James Duane Doty, with<br />

Amos Reed as secretary, and John Titus <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

being appointed chief justice in place <strong>of</strong><br />

Kinney, who at the next general election was chosen<br />

delegate to congress. 45<br />

Thus the president endeavored<br />

to restore peace by making concessions on both sides.<br />

In the spring <strong>of</strong> 1864 Judge Waite resigned in dis-<br />

gust, after holding a term <strong>of</strong> court, at which there<br />

was not a single case on the docket. 46<br />

His successor<br />

was a Missourian, named Solomon McCurdy. Judge<br />

Drake still remained at his post, 47<br />

though merely<br />

going through the form <strong>of</strong> holding court, all attempts<br />

to administer justice proving futile among a community<br />

that had never willingly submitted, and had not<br />

yet been compelled to submit, to gentile domination.<br />

The administration <strong>of</strong> Governor Doty lasted only<br />

for two years, and during this period little worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

note is recorded in the annals <strong>of</strong> <strong>Utah</strong>, this being<br />

perhaps the best evidence that some degree <strong>of</strong> har-<br />

where it is stated that Kinney's removal was caused by his subservience to<br />
