during this year the <strong>Utah</strong> Southern Extension was<br />

commenced at the latter point, completed during the<br />

following spring as far as Milford, 14 and a few weeks<br />

later to Frisco, the location <strong>of</strong> the Horn Silver mine,<br />

its distance from Juab being 138 miles. 15<br />

both these lines were incorporated with the<br />

Central.<br />

<strong>Utah</strong><br />

The <strong>Utah</strong> and Northern was organized in 1871,<br />

ground being broken at <strong>Brigham</strong> City in September<br />

<strong>of</strong> that year, and the road completed to Logan at the<br />

close <strong>of</strong> January 1873, and to Franklin, Idaho, by<br />

way <strong>of</strong> Ogden, early in the following year. 17 The<br />

means for building this line were raised by the people<br />

<strong>of</strong> northern <strong>Utah</strong> with great difficulty, and after being<br />

maintained for years, first at a loss and then with<br />

meagre returns, it was sold to the Union Pacific for<br />

an insignificant sum, in February 1877, 1 * extended<br />

through Idaho into western Montana, and in 1883 had<br />

become one <strong>of</strong> its most pr<strong>of</strong>itable branches.<br />

During Emery's administration a bill passed the<br />

legislature authorizing the counties <strong>of</strong> Salt Lake,<br />

Davis, Summit, and Tooele to issue bonds for the<br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> constructing a road from Coalville to<br />
