In France and Germany few proselytes were made.<br />

In the former country there were, in June 1850,<br />

branches <strong>of</strong> the church at Paris, Boulogne, Calais,<br />

and Havre; but the total number <strong>of</strong> members was<br />

probably little more than a hundred. 28 In Germany<br />

the Mormons were even less successful. In 1853<br />

Elder Cam, who, two years before, had been imprisoned<br />

and afterward expelled from the confederation<br />

for preaching Mormonism, applied at Berlin for permission<br />

to hold meetings. The answer was that he<br />

must leave the city immediately under pain <strong>of</strong> transportation.<br />
