During the disputes between Governor Cumming<br />

and General Johnston, the latter being aided, as we<br />

have seen, by the federal judges, there was constant<br />

fear that the troops would come into collision with the<br />

territorial militia. Though the Mormon authorities<br />

had no cause for complaint as to the conduct <strong>of</strong> the<br />

soldiery, they regarded their presence as a menace, and<br />

condemned the proceedings <strong>of</strong> the general and the<br />

judges as a personal insult to the governor.<br />

After the arrival <strong>of</strong> the army, <strong>Brigham</strong> never appeared<br />

in public without a body-guard <strong>of</strong> his own intimate<br />

friends; 1 and for many months he attended<br />

no public assemblies. At the door <strong>of</strong> his residence<br />

sentries kept watch by day, and at night a strong<br />

guard was stationed within its walls. Nor were these<br />

precautions unnecessary. About the end <strong>of</strong> March<br />

1859 a writ was issued for his apprehension on a<br />

groundless charge <strong>of</strong> complicity in forging notes on<br />
