In Winterbotham's history published in New York<br />

in 1795 is given a map <strong>of</strong> North America showing an<br />

enormous nameless inland sea above latitude 42° with<br />

small streams running into it, and south <strong>of</strong> said parallel<br />

and east <strong>of</strong> the meridian <strong>of</strong> the inland sea is a<br />

smaller body <strong>of</strong> water with quite a large stream flowing<br />

in from the west, besides three smaller ones from<br />

the south and north. As both <strong>of</strong> these bodies <strong>of</strong><br />

water were laid down from the imaginations <strong>of</strong> white<br />

men, or from vague and traditionary reports <strong>of</strong> the<br />

natives, it may be that only the one Great Salt Lake<br />

was originally referred to, or it may be that the original<br />

description was applied to two lakes or inland seas.<br />

The native village on one <strong>of</strong> the southern tributaries,<br />

Taguayo, refers to the habitations <strong>of</strong> the Timpanogos,<br />

and may have been derived from the Spaniards; but<br />

more probably the information was obtained through
