SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. IOI<br />

Mahmoud Reif Effendi, <strong>the</strong> Reis Effendi, was at <strong>the</strong> time above<br />

mentioned, between forty <strong>and</strong> fifty years of age. Dur<strong>in</strong>g a residence<br />

of four years <strong>in</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, as secretary to <strong>the</strong> Turkish ambassador,<br />

he acquired a great fund of general <strong>in</strong>formation : he speaks <strong>the</strong><br />

French language very fluently,<br />

<strong>and</strong> is<br />

justly<br />

considered as a man<br />

possess<strong>in</strong>g much <strong>and</strong> ability<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

An will<br />

opportunity occur, more consistently with <strong>the</strong> order of<br />

my narrative, of present<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> reader with a particular account of<br />

I sh^all, <strong>the</strong>refore, proceed to a con-<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turkish armv <strong>in</strong> camp ;<br />

of which it was stationed.<br />

cise description of Jaffa, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity<br />

Jaffa is situated on an em<strong>in</strong>ence: nearly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> town<br />

is an old ru<strong>in</strong>ous build<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

called <strong>the</strong> citadel, on <strong>the</strong> top of which<br />

is a round casemated tower, provided<br />

with one or two wretched<br />

pieces of ordnance. This work which by no means appears calcu-<br />

lated to repel <strong>the</strong> attack of an enemy from without, seems ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended to overawe <strong>the</strong> place itself,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event of <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>e com-<br />

motion.<br />

The city is surrounded by a stone wall, provided,<br />

at certa<strong>in</strong> dis-<br />

tances, with towers alternately square <strong>and</strong> round. Notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

this wall cannot boast of any great strength, it sufficed to force<br />

Bonaparte's army to break ground, <strong>and</strong> to erect batteries aga<strong>in</strong>st it<br />

to <strong>the</strong> southward. After a breach had been effected, <strong>the</strong> French<br />

troops stormed, <strong>and</strong> carried <strong>the</strong> place. It was probably ow<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> obst<strong>in</strong>ate defence made by <strong>the</strong> Turks, that <strong>the</strong> French comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />

<strong>in</strong> chief was <strong>in</strong>duced to give<br />

orders for <strong>the</strong> horrid massacre<br />

which succeeded. Four thous<strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> wretched <strong>in</strong>habitants, who<br />

had surrendered, <strong>and</strong> who had <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>, implored <strong>the</strong> mercy of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

conquerors, were, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a part of <strong>the</strong> late Turkish garrison<br />

of El-Arish (amount<strong>in</strong>g it has been said, to five or six hun-<br />

dred) dragged out <strong>in</strong> cold blood, four days after <strong>the</strong> French had<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed possession of Jaffa, to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong> hills, about a league dis-<br />

tanr, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way to Gaza, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re most <strong>in</strong>humanly put to death.<br />

I have seen <strong>the</strong> skeletons of <strong>the</strong>se unfortunate victims, which lie<br />

scattered over <strong>the</strong> hills, a modern Golgotha, which rema<strong>in</strong>s a last-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g disgrace to a nation call<strong>in</strong>g itself civilized. It would give pleasure<br />

to <strong>the</strong> author of this work, as well as to every liberal m<strong>in</strong>d,<br />

to hear <strong>the</strong>se facts contradicted on substantial evidence. Indeed I<br />

an sorry to add, that <strong>the</strong> charge of cruelty aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> French Ge-<br />

neral does not rest here. It hav<strong>in</strong>g been reported that previously<br />

to <strong>the</strong> retreat of <strong>the</strong> French army from <strong>Syria</strong>, <strong>the</strong>ir comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>in</strong><br />

chief had ordered all <strong>the</strong> French sick at Jaffa to be poisoned, I \v;.j
