any deficiency of timber; <strong>and</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>gly we met on our route<br />

with a considerable number of ashes, poplars, elms, <strong>and</strong> aspens,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with a few oaks. To this list may be added an abundance<br />

of apple <strong>and</strong> walnut trees.<br />

Fruits of every description known <strong>in</strong> Europe, are,<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

different vegetable productions, <strong>in</strong> equal plenty 5 <strong>and</strong> it may be said<br />

with truth, that few countries are better supplied with <strong>the</strong> more es-<br />

sential articles of life than Holl<strong>and</strong>. In <strong>the</strong><br />

gardens, <strong>and</strong> grounds<br />

adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> dwell<strong>in</strong>gs, tobacco is cultivated with great success.<br />

We halted at half past seven o'clock, to enable <strong>the</strong> horses to bait :<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were fed with bread <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same way as before noticed. Ha-<br />

v<strong>in</strong>g prosecuted our journey, we arrived at a small house, directly<br />

opposite to Rhenen, an <strong>in</strong>considerable town on <strong>the</strong> right bank of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Rh<strong>in</strong>e, surrounded, however, with f<strong>in</strong>e v<strong>in</strong>eyards. At this<br />

place we had to cross <strong>the</strong> river <strong>in</strong> a fiat boat, or ferry, kept ex-<br />

pressly <strong>the</strong>re, to convev passengers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir carriages <strong>and</strong> luggage,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side. Hav<strong>in</strong>g quitted, by this conveyance, <strong>the</strong><br />

left bank, <strong>and</strong> aga<strong>in</strong> set forward on our route, we soon after passed<br />

near <strong>the</strong> little but neat town of Arneron, embellished by ave-<br />

nues of f<strong>in</strong>e elms <strong>and</strong> oaks, <strong>and</strong> surrounded by groves <strong>and</strong> agreea-<br />

ble walks. No country could be more pleas<strong>in</strong>g than that through<br />

which we were now pass<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> spite of <strong>the</strong> emotions we<br />

felt on a recollection of <strong>the</strong> charm<strong>in</strong>g romantic scenery, <strong>and</strong> picturesque<br />

views of Austria, still we could not help regard<strong>in</strong>g Holl<strong>and</strong><br />

as <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> of real comfort <strong>and</strong> delight to <strong>the</strong> traveller. At<br />

half past one we arrived at Fag Jhusted, a small town, which<br />

we merely skirted <strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> took some refreshment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

suburb, while <strong>the</strong> horses were bait<strong>in</strong>g. At half past five <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

afternoon we arrived at Utrecht, where we reposed after our<br />

fatigues. The spr<strong>in</strong>g of one of our carriages be<strong>in</strong>g broken, it<br />

was necessary to put it <strong>in</strong> a good condition for <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

Utrecht is a large <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>some town, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g many good<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

<strong>the</strong> studied <strong>and</strong> uniform neatness of which must attract<br />

<strong>the</strong> admiration of<br />

every passenger. In <strong>the</strong> centre of each of <strong>the</strong><br />

streets a canal runs, on which vessels <strong>and</strong> boats are constantly na-<br />

vigat<strong>in</strong>g, for traffic <strong>and</strong> pleasure. On each side of <strong>the</strong>se canals<br />

a row of f<strong>in</strong>e trees, nicely trimmed, is planted; <strong>and</strong> over <strong>the</strong>m<br />

bridges are thrown at convenient distances, to conduct <strong>the</strong> pas-<br />

sengers from <strong>the</strong> one side of <strong>the</strong> street to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. This arrangement<br />

has a very agreeable efFect, to which <strong>the</strong> cleanl<strong>in</strong>ess of <strong>the</strong><br />

streets, carefully paved on each side, contributes not a little. We
