side of each cheek. From Dorhozvewe proceeded, after a short stay,<br />

to Herts ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nce to <strong>the</strong> station, near Chernuwick, where <strong>the</strong><br />

director of <strong>the</strong> counter march resides. It is <strong>the</strong>re that <strong>the</strong> quaran-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>e is performed, <strong>and</strong>. <strong>the</strong> passports <strong>and</strong> baggage <strong>in</strong>spected, previously<br />

situated at <strong>the</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> river Prut. The <strong>in</strong>-<br />

habitants are pr<strong>in</strong>cipally Germans, with a few Poles. We quitted<br />

this place at<br />

eight<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

as soon as our baggage had been<br />

fixed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ;<br />

carriage <strong>and</strong> at midnight arrived ztSnatten, where we<br />

allowed ourselves but a short repose.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 13th, at <strong>the</strong> early hour of one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, we quit-<br />

ted <strong>the</strong> above place, <strong>and</strong> at half past four arrived at Veno Gratz,<br />

or Guasditch, a pleas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> well-built town, situated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst<br />

of a fertile<br />

country.<br />

In this perform<strong>in</strong>g stage we had an excellent<br />

road. Our next stages, each of which occupied from two hours to<br />

two hours <strong>and</strong> a half, were to Kotsmier, Siowmax, Stcmitzslaf,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Alich, at <strong>the</strong> latter of which places we arrived at six <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g, without hav<strong>in</strong>g met with any<br />

remarkable occurrence on our<br />

-route. The country through which we passed had an appearance<br />

of great fertility, <strong>and</strong> abounded <strong>in</strong> beautiful woodl<strong>and</strong>s. At Alich<br />

we saw <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of a castle, situated on an em<strong>in</strong>ence, which had<br />

anciently belonged to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of Pol<strong>and</strong>. At seven <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g we quitted that place for Bars fern, whence we proceeded to<br />

Knenitch, where we arrived at<br />

midnight.<br />

We reached Strelitz at a<br />

very early hour on <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> road than that which <strong>the</strong><br />

1 1th, hav<strong>in</strong>g made no o<strong>the</strong>r stop<br />

necessity of chang<strong>in</strong>g horses required,<br />

<strong>and</strong> arrived at Bobberdah at<br />

five o'clock, after a harass<strong>in</strong>g journey over a rough <strong>and</strong> unpleasant<br />

road. Our subsequent stages were Davetoff, Limberg, Bartadoff,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Crutuk, at <strong>the</strong> latter of which places we d<strong>in</strong>ed. The latter<br />

part of <strong>the</strong> road, <strong>in</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> above stages, is highly agreeable,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g raised, <strong>and</strong> kept <strong>in</strong> excellent repair. For <strong>the</strong> distance<br />

of several miles it runs <strong>in</strong> a direct l<strong>in</strong>e, with beautiful trees planted<br />

on each side. This part of Pol<strong>and</strong> is Hat, but very fertile, <strong>and</strong><br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s many t<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> extensive woods of beeches <strong>and</strong> oaks. At
