TRAVELS IN ASIATIC TURKEY,<br />

neglect to provide<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> luxuries which <strong>the</strong>ir domes-<br />

tic habits have <strong>in</strong> a manner rendered <strong>in</strong>dispensable. In a Situation<br />

like <strong>the</strong> above, <strong>the</strong> fitt<strong>in</strong>g up of a warm bath, with ail <strong>the</strong> requisites<br />

<strong>and</strong> conveniencies which <strong>the</strong> Turks require, must have been<br />

an undertak<strong>in</strong>g of no easv accomplishment.<br />

About this time several of our people were affected with an <strong>in</strong>-<br />

flammatory cutaneous eruption, which spread<br />

face of <strong>the</strong> body <strong>and</strong> limbs, <strong>and</strong> produced a<br />

very unpleasant sensa-<br />

itself over <strong>the</strong> sur-<br />

tion of<br />

smart<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> It<br />

itch<strong>in</strong>g. proved to be <strong>the</strong><br />

prickly heat, by<br />

which strangers<br />

are<br />

usually<br />

attacked on <strong>the</strong>ir com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a warm<br />

climate ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> mav perhaps be ascribed to <strong>the</strong> check given to <strong>the</strong> per-<br />

spiration, which is very profuse dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tense heat of <strong>the</strong> dav,<br />

by <strong>the</strong> cool air of <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> even<strong>in</strong>gs. Vohxey makes mention<br />

of an eruption peculiar<br />

to <strong>Egypt</strong>, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> months of June <strong>and</strong><br />

July, which seems to correspond with <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned compla<strong>in</strong>t,<br />

<strong>and</strong> which he ascribes to a separation of vicious humours.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 13th I paid a visit to Osman Bey, one of <strong>the</strong> Mameluke<br />

chiefs, who was <strong>in</strong>disposed; <strong>and</strong> also at his request, to one of <strong>the</strong><br />

cachefs. I took <strong>the</strong> precaution to be accompanied by an nterpre-<br />

ter. Osman Bey, who was advanced <strong>in</strong> years, his age border<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on sixty-five, appeared not to be ill <strong>in</strong>formed, <strong>and</strong> was very <strong>in</strong>quisitive<br />

relative to <strong>the</strong> manufactures <strong>and</strong> commerce of Great Brita<strong>in</strong>.<br />

We had much conversation toge<strong>the</strong>r on a variety of topics.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> day time <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d blew from <strong>the</strong> south-west, from<br />

sun rise to sun set, when <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> breeze came on, <strong>and</strong> prevailed<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> night throughout <strong>the</strong> whole extent of coast. This local<br />

w<strong>in</strong>d extends two or three<br />

leagues only at sea, on this account<br />

that <strong>the</strong> air, rarefied by <strong>the</strong> heat of <strong>the</strong> day, <strong>and</strong> afterwards conden-<br />

sed by <strong>the</strong> cold of <strong>the</strong> night, rushes alternately from <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong><br />

sea, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> sea to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

This even<strong>in</strong>g Capta<strong>in</strong> Lacy arrived at <strong>the</strong> encampment from Con-<br />

stant<strong>in</strong>ople, hav<strong>in</strong>g executed <strong>the</strong> orders entrusted to him by Lord<br />

Elg<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g dispatches to <strong>the</strong> Vizier, &c.<br />

For a considerable time <strong>the</strong>re was an utter stagnation of events<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Turkish camp; but on <strong>the</strong> 26th it was very currently reported<br />

that <strong>the</strong> French had reached Caiich <strong>in</strong> great force. In conse-<br />

quence of <strong>the</strong>se rumours, <strong>the</strong> erection of several new works hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

been suggested to <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier, <strong>the</strong>y were immediately com-<br />

menced, under <strong>the</strong> direction of Lieutenanr-colonel Ilolloicay.<br />

<strong>the</strong> concise description 1 have given of Jaffa, I have already ob-<br />

served that, as it was deemed <strong>the</strong> most convenient sea-port<br />
