On <strong>the</strong> 12th a gr<strong>and</strong> diplomatic d<strong>in</strong>ner, at which sixty-two persons<br />

were present, was given by Lord Elg<strong>in</strong>. All <strong>the</strong> officers be-<br />

long<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> mission partook of this splendid fete. In <strong>the</strong> morn-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g 1 <strong>in</strong>oculated Master Sydney Smith, who had been under pre-<br />

paration for some days.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> 14th I made a tour through <strong>the</strong> city of<br />

Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, <strong>in</strong> company with Mr. Thornton, <strong>the</strong> English merchant,<br />

who, upon a variety of occasions, had manifested much<br />

friendly<br />

attention to his countrymen. The wea<strong>the</strong>r was remarkably<br />

f<strong>in</strong>e, but at <strong>the</strong> same time cold, it hav<strong>in</strong>g frozen dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

night. We' took boat at Galata, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> a small distance<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ancient castle denom<strong>in</strong>ated by Europeans <strong>the</strong> Seven<br />

Towers, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Turks Yeddikuli. Four only of <strong>the</strong> towers,<br />

erected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient wall, are left st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />

thrown down by <strong>the</strong> great earthquake of 1768.* From this place<br />

we prosecuted our walk without <strong>the</strong> walls of <strong>the</strong> city, <strong>and</strong> visited<br />

a Greek church, <strong>and</strong> also a Turkish cemetery, whence we had a<br />

f<strong>in</strong>e view of <strong>the</strong> castle of <strong>the</strong> seven towers, <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> sea. In <strong>the</strong><br />

course of our perambulation we saw <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> palace of Be-<br />

lisarius, below which we at length took boat, <strong>and</strong> arrived at Galata.<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon. f<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 15th I d<strong>in</strong>ed with <strong>the</strong> Danish charge d'affaires, Baron<br />

Ilubsch, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g paid a visit to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternuncio, who had<br />

i public night. Much ra<strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g fallen for several days successive-<br />

ly, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> temperature of <strong>the</strong> air be<strong>in</strong>g precisely such as to favour<br />

<strong>the</strong> production of <strong>the</strong> I plague, felt much uneas<strong>in</strong>ess lest that terrible<br />

scourge should become prevalent <strong>in</strong> Constant<strong>in</strong>ople before our departure.<br />

My apprehensions were <strong>in</strong>creased on <strong>the</strong> 17th, by<br />

an <strong>in</strong>cident<br />

which happened to<br />

myself.<br />

I had sent my boots to be re-<br />

paired to a shoemaker, at whose house I afterwards found <strong>the</strong> plague<br />

had broken out. In consequence of this event my boots were de-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong>ed ; <strong>and</strong> I learned on <strong>in</strong>quiry that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fected person had been<br />

conveyed to <strong>the</strong> pest-house.<br />

Several Turks who had recently committed robberies were apprehended<br />

on <strong>the</strong> 18th, <strong>and</strong> executed <strong>in</strong> a summary way. They<br />

* With<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>se towers state <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r prisoners are conf<strong>in</strong>ed. The resident French<br />

rn<strong>in</strong>is-ter, charjc d'affaires, at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, with several o<strong>the</strong>r persons of <strong>the</strong> same na-<br />

tion, were s:nt hi<strong>the</strong>r when <strong>the</strong> war broke out between France <strong>and</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se peo-<br />

ple were liberated from <strong>the</strong>ir conf<strong>in</strong>ement when <strong>the</strong> late peac: was signed.<br />

f I am <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to believe that <strong>the</strong> circumference of <strong>the</strong> city of Comtantlnople<br />

does not<br />

«xceed fourteen or sixteen miles, <strong>in</strong>dependently<br />

of <strong>the</strong> suburbs, which appear nearly ae<br />

fajTS? as <strong>the</strong> city itself.
