Of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e lots eight were for as many companies of jannissa-<br />

ries, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>th for <strong>the</strong> Choarbagis, or comm<strong>and</strong>ers. The bags<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> one of <strong>the</strong>se Jots hav<strong>in</strong>g been laid<br />

promiscuously with<strong>in</strong><br />

a signal was made for <strong>the</strong> company which was to be<br />

paid. This was no sooner done than all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to it rushed forward <strong>and</strong> scrambled for <strong>the</strong> bags, contend<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r who should carry <strong>the</strong>m off, to which circumstance <strong>the</strong>y<br />

attach no small share of honour, at <strong>the</strong> same time that it is not<br />

accompanied by any pecuniary advantage, <strong>the</strong> bags be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stantly<br />

taken to <strong>the</strong> tent of <strong>the</strong> Choarbagis comm<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> company, <strong>and</strong><br />

a proper distribution of <strong>the</strong> money <strong>the</strong>re made. Each of <strong>the</strong> com-<br />

panies hav<strong>in</strong>g received its lot or portion of <strong>the</strong> bags, <strong>the</strong> Choarbagis,<br />

who were permitted to wear <strong>the</strong>ir arms, had <strong>the</strong>irs delivered to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. The number distributed was an hundred <strong>and</strong> eighty-six,<br />

each of <strong>the</strong> purses or bags conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g five hundred piastres.<br />

The state officers who attended on this occasion were dressed <strong>in</strong><br />

scarlet benices, or robes of honour; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tefterdar was, on <strong>the</strong><br />

conclusion of <strong>the</strong> ceremony, <strong>in</strong>vested with a caftan, as were likewise<br />

all those who were immediately concerned under him <strong>in</strong> ma-<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> payments. Except <strong>the</strong> contests which ensued, <strong>in</strong> this very<br />

extraord<strong>in</strong>ary mode of pay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> troops, to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession<br />

of <strong>the</strong> bags, not a tumultuous voice was heard; but <strong>the</strong> whole was<br />

conducted with great gravity <strong>and</strong> tranquillity.<br />

In consequence of advices received from El-Arish on <strong>the</strong> 17th,<br />

purport<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> French had on hear<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> movement made<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Bey, Hassan Djadarvi, sent a body of fifteen hundred men<br />

to oppose him, <strong>and</strong> had also thrown a fresh body of troops <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Sala/ueh, <strong>the</strong>re was a considerable degree of ap-itation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tur'-<br />

kish camp. It was reported also that a brig, supposed to be French,<br />

had been hover<strong>in</strong>g for some days off El-Arish. It was obvious<br />

that, <strong>the</strong> Turk^hav<strong>in</strong>g received no direct <strong>in</strong>telligence of <strong>the</strong>se events<br />

from those who were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir confidence, an entire belief ought not<br />

to have been attached to <strong>the</strong> rumours thus circulated, yet<br />

<strong>the</strong> alarm<br />

<strong>the</strong>y excited had <strong>the</strong> good effect of keep<strong>in</strong>g our allies more on <strong>the</strong><br />

alert than usual, <strong>and</strong> of <strong>in</strong>duc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to send out advanced parties.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, on <strong>the</strong> 20th, new reports hav<strong>in</strong>g reached <strong>the</strong> Vizier<br />

from El-Arish, that <strong>the</strong> enemy's forces were <strong>in</strong> motion, <strong>and</strong> that<br />

a part of <strong>the</strong>m had already reached Catieh, Capta<strong>in</strong> Leake of <strong>the</strong>
