EARLY on <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g July 3d, <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g sent horses from his camp for our accommodation, we<br />

paid a visit to his Highness, <strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> Reis Effendi. From<br />

each of <strong>the</strong>m we met with a very polite <strong>and</strong><br />

friendly reception <strong>and</strong><br />

We found <strong>the</strong> Turkish troops encamped <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> most confused <strong>and</strong><br />

irregular manner, without any order <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> positions <strong>the</strong>y occupied,<br />

each <strong>in</strong>dividual hav<strong>in</strong>g pitched his tent on <strong>the</strong> spot which was most<br />

agreeable to his <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ation. The only regulation<br />
