entry <strong>in</strong>to Cairo, under a general discharge of artillery, <strong>and</strong><br />

amidst <strong>the</strong> acclamations of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants, who were assembled <strong>in</strong><br />

immense numbers on this great <strong>and</strong> solemn occasion. The whole<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ceremony was conducted without <strong>the</strong> smallest confusion.<br />

ABOUT this period I made an excursion, with a party,<br />

to <strong>the</strong><br />

pyramids of Giza, of which <strong>the</strong> three<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipal are <strong>in</strong> a tolerable<br />

state of preservation. Several of a smaller size are situated<br />

very near to each o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> a direction from east to west, beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> former. One cf <strong>the</strong> latter, however, built of a soft calcareous<br />

stone, was, when 1 saw <strong>the</strong>m, rapidly fall<strong>in</strong>g to decay.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> three great pyramids one is of an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary bulk ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> second is but little <strong>in</strong>ferior to it <strong>in</strong> size; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> third comparatively<br />

small, but <strong>the</strong> proportions of it would be considered as verv<br />

great, if it was placed<br />

<strong>in</strong> an isolated state from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. This<br />

smalicrof <strong>the</strong> three pr<strong>in</strong>cipal pyramids appears to have been f<strong>in</strong>ish..
