stuffs, pla<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> striped cottons <strong>and</strong> dimities, <strong>and</strong> various articles of<br />

embroidery. The cotton stock<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> night-caps manufactured<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are held <strong>in</strong> very general estimation.<br />

Large quantities of olive oil, of <strong>the</strong> purest <strong>and</strong> most delicious<br />

quality, are annually exported to Venice, which is also <strong>the</strong> mart<br />

for <strong>the</strong> turpent<strong>in</strong>e collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, The export of w<strong>in</strong>e, of<br />

<strong>the</strong> growth of Scio, to Constant<strong>in</strong>ople <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>Turkey</strong> ',<br />

is but <strong>in</strong>considerable, <strong>the</strong> Greek <strong>in</strong>habitants, who are passionately<br />

fond of it, consum<strong>in</strong>g by far <strong>the</strong> greater proportion of <strong>the</strong> produce<br />

of <strong>the</strong> v<strong>in</strong>tage.<br />

We procured a quantity of good red w<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong><br />

preced<strong>in</strong>g v<strong>in</strong>tage at ten <strong>and</strong> twelve paras <strong>the</strong> oke ; but <strong>the</strong> old<br />

w<strong>in</strong>e is still dearer.<br />

Adjacent to <strong>the</strong> town of Scio <strong>the</strong>re are a considerable number of<br />

extensive enclosed gardens,<br />

filled with every description of <strong>the</strong><br />

fruits <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> produces, <strong>and</strong> with aromatic plants <strong>and</strong> shrubs, <strong>the</strong><br />

fragrant odours exhaled from which impregnate <strong>the</strong> air to <strong>the</strong> dis-<br />

tance of several miles at sea, when <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d blows off <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

We were very sensible of this when approach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

The port of Sew is very unsafe when <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d blows from <strong>the</strong><br />

east <strong>and</strong> east-south-east: it is likewise open to <strong>the</strong> north w<strong>in</strong>ds,<br />

which are, however, less dangerous than <strong>the</strong> Levanters, or easterly<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ds. It is, however, a convenient harbour for caicks <strong>and</strong> light<br />

vessels of<br />

every description. The passage<br />

to Smyrna, by <strong>the</strong> route<br />

of Chisme, opposite to Scio, is very short, be<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> compass<br />

of a day's journey by l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Passengers cross over from Scio<br />

to Chisme <strong>in</strong> caicks, which are<br />

constantly employed for that pur-<br />

pose, as well as for <strong>the</strong> conveyance of merch<strong>and</strong>ize. The journey<br />

from Chisme is made by l<strong>and</strong> on mules, <strong>and</strong> it requires about<br />

twelve hours to reach Smyrna, by a very rocky <strong>and</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>ous<br />

road. The whole of <strong>the</strong> expense to a person who undertakes this<br />

route from Scio to Smyrna does not exceed five piastres, or seven<br />

shill<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> sixpence English. We felt great regret at be<strong>in</strong>g prevented<br />

by circumstances from visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> latter city.<br />

The population of <strong>the</strong> town of Scio is estimated at about twentyfive<br />

thous<strong>and</strong> souls, that is, nearly, if not entirelv, <strong>the</strong> half of <strong>the</strong><br />

complete population of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. Of this population about<br />

twentv-two thous<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals are Greeks, with two thous<strong>and</strong><br />

Turks, <strong>and</strong> about a thous<strong>and</strong> Catholics <strong>and</strong> Jews. The o<strong>the</strong>r parts<br />

of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> are exclusively <strong>in</strong>habited by Greeks.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g expressed a desire to view <strong>the</strong> churches <strong>in</strong> Scio belong<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> latter nation, <strong>the</strong> English consul conducted us to three of
