These people embarked, after a few days, with <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> janissaries,<br />

on board a vessel go<strong>in</strong>g to Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, carry<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>s, Sec. of a man who died under very suspicious<br />

symptoms of plague.<br />

Feb. 1 1 . This day was oppressively warm <strong>and</strong> sultry.<br />

W<strong>in</strong>d S. <strong>and</strong> S. W. we experienced a kamps<strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, which<br />

raised clouds of dust <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> atmosphere, <strong>and</strong> produced a cont<strong>in</strong>ual<br />

haz<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

The eyes, which suffered from this heat <strong>and</strong> irritation, were re-<br />

lieved by repeated ablutions of cold water.<br />

Feb. 13. The whole of <strong>the</strong> mission be<strong>in</strong>g entirely free from<br />

<strong>in</strong>fectious symptoms, were ordered to proceed to Alex<strong>and</strong>ria. The<br />

Pacha of Gr<strong>and</strong> Cairo has stated that, " from <strong>the</strong> most vigilant<br />

" enquiry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town <strong>and</strong> suburbs of Cairo, he has not heard of<br />

" ano<strong>the</strong>r case of plague at present." However, little or no de-<br />

pendance can <strong>in</strong> reality be placed upon <strong>the</strong> reports of <strong>the</strong> Turks.<br />

In Upper <strong>Egypt</strong> we have heard, that <strong>the</strong> disease is already re-ap-<br />

pear<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Feb. 14. Foggy <strong>and</strong> very cloudy wea<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>the</strong> sun completely<br />

obscured this day; a circumstance which does not often happen <strong>in</strong><br />

have been<br />

<strong>Egypt</strong>, except dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fall of ra<strong>in</strong>. Several days past<br />

close <strong>and</strong> sultry.<br />

Feb. 2'). Tremendous gales of w<strong>in</strong>d, W. N.W. which were<br />

accompanied on <strong>the</strong> 25th with heavy showers of ra<strong>in</strong>. Indeed, <strong>the</strong><br />

wea<strong>the</strong>r was tempestuous from <strong>the</strong> 20th to <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> month.<br />

The highest temperature 73 ; lowest 44.<br />

Upon our arrival at Rosetta, on <strong>the</strong> 23d February, we found<br />

<strong>the</strong> plague had already appeared <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>and</strong> had been fatal to a Ser-<br />

jeant of <strong>the</strong> Indian troops, <strong>and</strong> several of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants.<br />

The mission rema<strong>in</strong>ed well; but, upon <strong>the</strong>ir arrival at Alexan-<br />

dria on <strong>the</strong> 7th of Mareh, were put under quarant<strong>in</strong>e for fifteen<br />

days, as were all vessels <strong>and</strong> persons com<strong>in</strong>g from Rosetta, several<br />

cases of plague hav<strong>in</strong>g been said to have been received at Alexan-<br />

dria from <strong>the</strong> latter place.<br />

March. The month of Mareh was stormy <strong>and</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>y, <strong>and</strong> on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 20th heavy ra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> hail fell, accompanied with thunder <strong>and</strong><br />

lightn<strong>in</strong>g. W<strong>in</strong>ds variable, N. E. N. W. N. W. N.<br />

The highest temperature 79; lowest 57.<br />

Great dews fell about <strong>the</strong> 16th.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g been so unlucky as to break my <strong>the</strong>rmometer on <strong>the</strong><br />

24th <strong>in</strong>stant, I was obliged to close my observations with it-, <strong>and</strong>
