SYRIA, EGYPT, GERMANY, &C. 69<br />

voyage was to make draw<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

views of Constant<strong>in</strong>ople for his panorama. 1 must add, <strong>in</strong><br />

justice<br />

to Mr. Barker, that he has been extremely successful <strong>in</strong> his two<br />

views of that place,<br />

than which noth<strong>in</strong>g can be more correct."<br />

Noth<strong>in</strong>g material occurred until <strong>the</strong> 8th, when, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g myself<br />

tolerably recovered from my late <strong>in</strong>disposition, 1 d<strong>in</strong>ed with Lord<br />

Elg<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> returned to Galala <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

even<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst of a<br />

heavy fall of ra<strong>in</strong>. Ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> unusual severity of <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> want of fire-places; <strong>the</strong> practice of burn<strong>in</strong>g charcoal <strong>in</strong> th^<br />

apartments to heat <strong>the</strong>m had become very frequent both among <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>and</strong> strangers, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>in</strong> a manner <strong>in</strong>dispensable.<br />

For this purpose <strong>the</strong> charcoal was put <strong>in</strong>to ear<strong>the</strong>rn pans, called<br />

<strong>and</strong> must<br />

monguls, from whence it exhaled its mephitic vapours',<br />

have been productive<br />

of much mischief <strong>in</strong> close <strong>and</strong> conf<strong>in</strong>ed apart?<br />

ments, if we could judge from <strong>the</strong> effects it produced on us, who<br />

took every precaution<br />

to renew <strong>the</strong> air. The most sensible of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

effects were headach, vertigo, nausea, <strong>and</strong> a violent throbb<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> temples. We found that fatal consequences had already<br />

resulted from this practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> present season, several<br />

persons, <strong>in</strong> whose rooms charcoal had been burned dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

night, hav<strong>in</strong>g been found dead <strong>the</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g. Among <strong>the</strong>se<br />

we were told of seven ladies belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Vizier, who<br />

had been found dead <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir apartments a few morn<strong>in</strong>gs before, <strong>and</strong><br />

whose death was to be ascribed to no o<strong>the</strong>r cause. Added to its<br />

usual noxious qualities, <strong>the</strong> charcoal made <strong>in</strong> <strong>Turkey</strong> is extremely<br />

bad, <strong>and</strong> by no means sufficiently charred.<br />

The natural small-pox had lately been very prevalent <strong>in</strong> Constan-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ople, <strong>and</strong> was extremely fatal <strong>in</strong> its effects. The great mortality<br />

it occasioned was <strong>in</strong> some measure to be ascribed to <strong>the</strong> mode of<br />

treatment, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> methods employed. The heat of <strong>the</strong> apartments<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> sick were conf<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> which charcoal <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>flammatory substances were burned, was equal to that of a hothouse;<br />

<strong>and</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g extremely oppressive to persons <strong>in</strong> health, could<br />

not fail to have a s<strong>in</strong>ister tendencv <strong>in</strong> cases of eruptive fever, which<br />

required <strong>in</strong>deed a treatment altoge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

different from that which was<br />

pursued.*<br />

* The Earl of Elg<strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g happily <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong>to practice <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>oculation of Cow-pox<br />

at Constant<strong>in</strong>ople, <strong>the</strong> mortality from variolous disease will <strong>in</strong> future, I trust, be consi-<br />

derably lessened.<br />

His Lordship began with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>oculation of his own child : <strong>the</strong> disease, on its production,<br />

was so extremely mild, that several Christian families speedily followed his Lordship's<br />

laudable example. This success <strong>in</strong>duced <strong>the</strong> Turks to lessen <strong>the</strong>ir prejudices ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> several <strong>in</strong>stances occurred, before I quitted <strong>Turkey</strong>, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y had submitted to<br />

<strong>the</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>oculation upon <strong>the</strong>ti -<br />

children with <strong>the</strong> usual happy consequences.
