monastic life.<br />

About half a mile from Jerusalem, near <strong>the</strong> tombs of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Jews, towards Siloe, is seen <strong>the</strong> execrable place where <strong>the</strong><br />

sacrilegious Judas, after hav<strong>in</strong>g sold Jesus, hanged himself. Two<br />

miles from <strong>the</strong> Mount of Olives, st<strong>and</strong>s Bcthana, where are <strong>the</strong><br />

vestiges of <strong>the</strong> house of Mary Magdalene <strong>and</strong> Martha, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

tomb where Lazarus <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>r was buried <strong>and</strong> raised to lite<br />

agaki. Not far from this place is Beth/age, upon a hill, where,<br />

by <strong>the</strong> desire of our Saviour, <strong>the</strong> apostles brought him an ass, upon<br />

which he gloriously entered Jerusalem, on Palm-day, by <strong>the</strong> gol-<br />

den where <strong>the</strong>re is now a wall.<br />

gate,<br />

On Mount Sion, is seen <strong>the</strong> cenaculum, or supper-room, where<br />

<strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost descended upon <strong>the</strong> apostles; where <strong>the</strong> Saviour<br />

appeared to <strong>the</strong>m after <strong>the</strong> resurrection, <strong>and</strong> washed <strong>the</strong>ir feet; <strong>and</strong><br />

where he also appeared to St. Thomas. The place where St. Mat-<br />

thias was elected an apostle, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> room of Judas, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> tomb of<br />

David who lived seventy years <strong>and</strong> six months, are also to be seen<br />

<strong>the</strong>re. At a short distance from Mount Sion is <strong>the</strong> house where <strong>the</strong><br />

Virg<strong>in</strong> Mary lived after<br />

neatly twenty-four years<br />

sion, <strong>and</strong> where, accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her son's ascen-<br />

to tradition, she died. Near this is <strong>the</strong><br />

chapel of St. John <strong>the</strong> Evangelist. Enter<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> gate<br />

called Sterguill<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

you come to a little grotto, where Peter wept, after ha-<br />

v<strong>in</strong>g denied Christ. Far<strong>the</strong>r on is <strong>the</strong>. house of Anna, <strong>the</strong> highpriest,<br />

where Jesus was led bound, <strong>and</strong> where <strong>the</strong> ungrateful Mal-<br />

co, servant of <strong>the</strong> high-priest, who had been healed but a little before,<br />

gave <strong>the</strong> Saviour a blow: this place belongs<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Armenians.<br />

Near it is seen an olive-tree, to which Christ was bound,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> palace of Caiphas, <strong>the</strong> high-priest. There St. Helen built<br />

a church, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Armenians <strong>the</strong> convent which <strong>the</strong>y now oc-<br />

cupy. In a corner of <strong>the</strong> church, on <strong>the</strong> right of <strong>the</strong> great altar,<br />

h <strong>the</strong> prison where Christ rema<strong>in</strong>ed a whole night. Near <strong>the</strong><br />

door of <strong>the</strong> church, on <strong>the</strong> right, under a portico, is <strong>the</strong> place<br />

where <strong>the</strong> maid said to Peter, " <strong>and</strong> this man was likewise<br />

with him," <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> place where Peter thrice denied Christ, on<br />

which <strong>the</strong>re is a tree, as a mark of it. There is likewise a place<br />

called <strong>the</strong> cock crow* because <strong>the</strong> cock crowed on that spot, <strong>and</strong> re-<br />
